PHILLIPS SCHOOL DISTRICT DEBATES EXCESS REFERENDUM FUNDS AND POSSIBLE LAND SALE

Over the course of a number of school board meetings in 2023, there has been discussion of how to use the extra funds that are left over from the school referendum which built the new building and combined all three schools in one location.  The amount is approximately $375,000.

Having remaining funds is "a great problem for school districts to have at the completion of a project of this stature," as stated at a school board meeting.  The funds may be used for debt reduction or demolition of the old elementary school.  The public can contact the superintendent, Rachel Hoffman, or the director of financial services, Molly Lehman, at the district office, along with any of the school board members with ideas for how to use the funds.

A possible land sale was also discussed at the August school board meeting.  Marty Stefan stated, "With a move to the new elementary, there are two parcels that could possibly be developed and there have been inquiries.  Regarding the area where the teachers used for parking and the adjacent area down the road that is the memorial garden, that particular memorial would be relocated to the area near the existing community garden here [at the 4K-12 school complex].  Mr. Willett has been contacted and is in favor of such action."  Jon Pesko felt there would be enough parking remaining at the old elementary school building and that the parking lot and memorial garden area could be sold without causing a problem.  A motion was made and carried so that the sale of these parcels can be further discussed at the annual meeting.  There will also be discussion regarding the sale of "general school property," among other topics.

The annual meeting will be held on Monday, October 2, 2023 at 6 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center.
